The Hex Bots remote control crawling spider is a small electromechanical robot built to skitter across hard floors on eight articulated legs. Under the clear exoskeleton casing you can watch the gearing drive each leg in sequence, which is genuinely interesting to look at and a large part of why these hold attention longer than a standard remote control toy.

Steering is 360 degrees, so it turns on the spot rather than needing a wide arc, and a glowing LED eye keeps it visible when the lights go down. That combination makes it far more effective as a prank than it has any right to be.

Best on smooth surfaces such as floorboards, tiles, or a kitchen bench. Deep carpet will slow the legs down, and a long hallway gives the fastest run. The LR44 batteries are already fitted, so it works the moment the packaging comes off, which matters if it is being handed over at a party. As an introduction to how robotics actually work, it is more effective than most toys marketed as STEM, simply because the mechanism is visible while it moves.
