Charlie is a 36cm soft doll built for the serious work of looking after someone. Removable pyjamas and a nappy mean children can change him and get him ready for bed, and the bottle has a magnetic tip that holds it in place at feeding time.
Role play is how children process change, and a new baby in the house is a big one. Having their own person to feed, change and put down for a nap gives a child a way to make sense of what they are watching - and a role of their own at a moment when everything feels focused elsewhere.
A bottle that falls out every three seconds ends the game. One that holds itself in place lets a child tuck Charlie into a cot with his bottle and leave him there - which is exactly the kind of completed, satisfying sequence young children are after.
Getting pyjamas onto a floppy soft doll is genuinely fiddly. Children persist because they want the outcome, and in doing so they practise the same manipulations they will need for their own buttons and sleeves.
Charlie goes into the machine inside a pillowcase, so he stays presentable through the porridge, the sandpit and everything else that happens to a well-loved doll.
Nurturing play is not a girls' activity, and Charlie is designed accordingly - neutral clothing, a friendly face and no styling that signals who he is meant for. Boys benefit from caring play exactly as much, and having a doll that does not look like it was made for someone else removes the only real barrier.
An excellent gift for a child expecting a sibling, and a nurturing play toy that suits boys and girls equally.
