The ARK proBarbell™ Set is an oral motor therapy tool designed to work on lip closure, lip strength and endurance. The set includes two weighted tools with different difficulty levels, allowing the exercise to progress from the lighter blue proBarbell to the heavier green proBarbell.

ARK developed the proBarbell as a purpose-made alternative to the traditional oral motor exercise of attaching coins to the ends of a tongue depressor. The weighted ends provide resistance while the flat centre is held between the lips.

Two Levels of Difficulty

Each proBarbell provides a different amount of weight:

Blue proBarbell: lighter level, with the equivalent weight of one quarter on each end
Green proBarbell: heavier level, with the equivalent weight of two quarters on each end

Start with the lighter blue proBarbell before progressing to the heavier green version for increased difficulty.

How the proBarbell Works

Place the flat centre of the blue proBarbell between the lips and hold it in position using the lips only, without using the teeth. This activity works on lip closure, strength and endurance.

Once greater resistance is appropriate, progress to the heavier green proBarbell.

Why Work on Lip Closure?

According to ARK, lip closure is an important oral motor skill for speech and feeding development. Working on lip closure can help improve feeding skills, drinking skills, saliva control and speech sound production.
