Kids paint directly onto tiles, the side of the tub and their own arms and legs, then rinse the whole lot away with the shower head when they are finished.

Mess you have already planned for

The reason bath paints work is that the mess is contained in the one room in the house designed to get wet. There is no drop sheet, no covered table and no anxiety about the carpet. When the painting is done, the clean-up is the bath the child was going to have anyway.

What makes these work

Washable formula that rinses off tiles, tub and skin with water

Bright colours that show up clearly on wet white surfaces

Sized for small hands to hold and apply without help

Turns bath time into an activity rather than a task

Stores on the bath edge or in a shower caddy between uses

Designed and illustrated in Australia by Tiger Tribe

Large-scale painting is different painting

Painting on a vertical tiled wall uses the whole arm rather than the fingers, which builds the shoulder and upper-arm stability that fine motor control is actually built on. It also frees kids from the boundaries of a page, and the work they produce at that scale tends to be looser and more confident.

Getting the most out of a set

Wet the tiles first — paint spreads further and lifts more easily off a damp surface. Encourage big shapes rather than fine detail, since the surface rewards scale. And rinse the walls down before draining the bath, while the paint is still soft and the shower is already running.

Before you start

Test on a small hidden area first, and rinse surfaces promptly rather than letting the paint dry on grout or natural stone.
